Oct. 31 + Nov. 1

English I and II: Both classes will be writing the final drafts of their expository essays, taking Reading Counts quizzes (students should be reading at least a half an hour a night at home!), and participating in centers on literary skills such as: Author’s Purpose, Credibility, Poetry Analysis, Tone, Summarizing.

Reading I: We will be finishing our themed story, practicing our URP skills, and making inferences!

NOTE: Six week’s tests our next week as it is the last week of this short six weeks. Also, all makeup work needs to be in soon. Please come to tutoring before or after school any day. Thanks! Happy Halloween!

Oct. 29 + 30

English I: We are finishing the rough drafts of our expository essays and peer critiquing. We’re also learning about credible sources and why we do or don’t believe an author. In addition, we’re having a lit. circle discussion about our in class reading book.

English II: We are analyzing the poem “The Witch” by Jack Prelutsky using SOAPSTone, finishing our rough draft of our essay if we haven’t yet and peer critiquing, and participating in a literature circle discussion.

Reading I: We’re writing and re-writing the rough draft of our themed story and we’re going to be practicing analyzing questions.

HOMEWORK ALL CLASSES: Everyone should be reading at least a half of an hour a night as Reading Counts points are due by the end of next week. Please be coming to tutoring before or after school any day! Late bus runs Monday-Thursday.

Oct. 25 and 28

English I: Summary and critique practice and concluding our expository essay.

English II: Symbolism and theme in poetry and writing the conclusion of our rough draft.

Reading I: Inference practice and finishing the rough draft of our themed piece.

HW: Students should be reading half and hour or more a night at home. There is also an extra credit opportunity to create a literary/writing skill poster/chart. Please send your student to tutoring before or after school any day!

Oct. 23 and 24

English I: Understanding and analyzing tone. Writing the intro. and first body paragraph of expository essay about how clothing reflects personality.

English II: Analyzing tone and figurative language in the poem “The Possessive” by Sharon Olds. Beginning the rough draft of our expository essay about luck vs. hard work.

Reading I: Practicing using text evidence effectively and working on our rough draft of our themed piece.

HW: Students should be reading half and hour or more a night at home. There is also an extra credit opportunity to create a literary/writing skill poster/chart. Please send your student to tutoring before or after school any day!

Oct. 21 and 22

English I: We will be doing a crossover OEQ between our group text and “In Sentencing Remember the Victims.” We’ll also be updating our reading calendar and working on our expository essay.

English II: We will be analyzing the poem “The Possessive” using SOAPSTone and answering an inferential OEQ. Then we will do a timed write.

Reading I: We’ll be doing inference questions on our SSR books and with practice test questions as well as working on our themed writing assignment.

HW: Students should be reading 30 minutes or more a night. Thanks! Please be in touch with questions and parents/guardians be on the lookout for student tutoring requests. I’m on campus every morning about 8 and most afternoons. Thursday afternoons I’m in the library.
